The Meadow
Lake First Nation (MLFN) Governance Team works toward increasing
public awareness, supporting the MLFN Constitutional Development
Committees, and continuing negotiations toward the Governance Agreement
(formerly known as the Final Agreement). On January 22, 2001, the Comprehensive Agreement-in-Principle and Tripartite Agreement-in-Principle was signed between seven of the MLFNs, MLTC, Canada and Saskatchewan. This agreement was the first milestone of many in which the rights of each MLFN to govern and administer their own affairs was recognized by Canada and Saskatchewan. Since then, a lot of work has been done not only on the Governance Agreement, but also negotiating other issues such as Traditional Territories and Non-Resident Citizens. The communities continue to work on developing constitutions for their First Nation. Constitutional Development Committees in each First Nation have been developed and continue to develop a document outlining what their government will look like and how it will operate. The communities of English River and Flying Dust have made significant progress in completing the major components of their constitution in draft form. Negotiations are still taking place regarding the Governance Agreement. The communities continue working hard on completing their individual constitutions. Restoring the Meadow Lake First Nations government remains a learning process for all involved and the benefit to the community members has already begun. A Governance website is currently under development. The link will be provided below once it is complete. |
