Mistik Management is a forest management company 50% owned by NorSask
Forest Products which is in turn wholly owned by the Meadow Lake Tribal
Council. The licensed area of mixed-wood forest that Mistik manages
extends approximately 3.3 million hectares. The softwood harvested by
Mistik goes directly to the NorSask sawmill which is governed by its
board of directors and MLTC. The hardwood harvested by Mistik goes to
the Millar Western Pulp Mill operated by the Meadow Lake Pulp
Partnership which is the other 50% of Mistik Management. In conjunction with a management board from each of the nine MLTC First Nations, Mistik governs itself according to the best interests of community-based forest users such as trappers, wild rice growers/harvesters and outfitters. Also, Mistik has a policy in place whereby local residents have first right to economic opportunities flowing from its operations. Using innovative forest management techniques including a vigorous reforestation program, this company has worked hard to harvest its mixed forest resources responsibly. With United States import tariffs still pressuring the Canadian lumber industry, Mistik has responded by creatively lowering its operating costs. Not only has this challenge increased the viability of NorSask and Millar Western Pulp, it has limited repercussions to its contractors as approximately 65% of them are Aboriginal. Mistik Management has also worked with the Meadow Lake Oriented Strand Board Limited Partnership whereby Mistik voluntarily assigned the Bronson, Green lake and Sled Lake lands to Meadow Lake OSB. |
